Meeting the world’s energy needs

Since our last report, we have expanded our business significantly in response to rapidly growing global energy demand. At present, more than 3 billion people in Asia and around the world are in the midst of an industrial revolution – one that promises to lift scores of people out of poverty while enhancing the quality of life for countless others. That’s an exceptionally positive development. But it brings with it a new set of challenges – particularly for the world’s energy providers.

Being part of the solution

Helping to meet the world’s growing energy needs in a careful and responsible manner is central to our mission here at Arch Coal. We are focused on continuous improvement in all phases of our business – and believe we have a particularly compelling story to tell in the social responsibility arena. Among other things, we are:

• Extending our safety initiatives to an expanded portfolio of mines, with the goal of achieving a perfect record at every one of our mines each and every year;
• Supporting initiatives that promise to enhance further the science of land reclamation and water protection;
• Investing in advanced coal technologies that can help make coal use cleaner and more climate friendly; and
• Continuing to search out new ways to make the communities in which we operate stronger, more successful and better prepared for the future.

We recognize that there is no perfect energy source, including coal. But the world needs huge new supplies of affordable, reliable, secure and increasingly clean energy – and we believe coal can, and indeed must, be part of the answer.
